Even though low carbohydrate diets are becomming popular again, doctors do not agree with them. Doctors do not support the low carb diets because the diets have a high fat content, restrict fruits and vegetables, and high fiber breads and cereals. The idea that taking in too many carbs causes weight gain is misleading. Consuming to many calories causes weight gain. Low carb diets cause you to lose weight because they restirict your energy intake. Following this diet starves your body of the essential nutrients it needs, and can cause major metabolic disturbances. The rapid weight loss on the low carbohydrate diet is mainly the loss of water, not body fat.

The effects of a low carbohydrate diet are nausea, constipation, dizziness, dehydration, lethargy, loss of appetite, and bad breath. Following this diet can increase your risk of getting cancer, can cause an increased risk for heart disease, and you could get diabetes.

If you do not consume enough carbohydrates, your body will begin to break down tissue and muscle to get the glucose it needs for energy. This causes a build up of waste products, most commonly seen in people who are starving, or who are untreated for diabetes.

So in spite of what you have heard in the news, or in other media, following the low carbohydrate diet is bad for weight loss. If you chose to follow this diet you are not going to get the results you want to loose weight and to keep it off. You will also be putting your health in jeapordy. So when chosing the right diet for you, do your research. Chose one that is beneficial to your health, and beneficial to effectice weight loss.
